The larch is the only conifer that sheds its needles — and just before it does, the entire valley turns amber and yellow. Een paar jaar geleden verhuisde ik voor de liefde van Nederland naar Zwitserland. Samen met mijn vrouw woon ik nu in het Prättigau, een prachtige vallei niet ver van het Engadin. Sindsdien lopen mijn paden door dit gebied, omringd door zijn prachtige bergen. Die kennis — welke hotels het meest authentiek zijn, welke dorpjes de moeite waard zijn — zet ik voor jou om in een reis die je nog lang bij zal blijven.A few years ago I moved from the Netherlands to Switzerland for love. Together with my wife I now live in the Prättigau, a beautiful valley not far from the Engadin. Since then my paths have run through this area, surrounded by its beautiful mountains. That knowledge — which hotels are most authentic, which villages are worth it — I turn into a journey you'll remember for a long time.

Waar het Oberengadin bekend staat om St. Moritz en glamour, heeft het Unterengadin iets wat veel zeldzamer is: stilte. Het is het deel van het Engadin dat de meeste reizigers nooit zien — ze rijden er doorheen op weg naar ergens anders.Where the Oberengadin is known for St. Moritz and glamour, the Unterengadin has something far rarer: silence. It's the part of the Engadin that most travellers never see — they drive through it on the way to somewhere else.

Het Unterengadin strekt zich uit van Zernez tot aan de Oostenrijkse grens bij Martina — een smal dal ingeklemd tussen de Silvretta in het noorden en de Sesvenna in het zuiden, gekruist door de Inn. De dorpjes langs het dal — Scuol, Guarda, Ardez, Sent, Lavin — lijken in de tijd te zijn blijven staan.The Unterengadin stretches from Zernez to the Austrian border at Martina — a narrow valley wedged between the Silvretta in the north and the Sesvenna in the south, crossed by the Inn. De architectuurThe architecture

Wat het Unterengadin onmiddellijk onderscheidt zijn de Engadiner huizen — massieve stenen gebouwen met muren van soms een meter dik, gebouwd om de barre winters te weerstaan. Maar het is de buitenkant die de adem beneemt.What immediately sets the Unterengadin apart are the Engadine houses — massive stone buildings with walls sometimes a metre thick, built to withstand the harsh winters. But it's the outside that takes your breath away.

Bijna elk huis is bedekt met sgraffito — een eeuwenoude techniek waarbij patronen in de nog natte kalklaag worden gekrast, waarna de donkere onderlaag zichtbaar wordt. Bloemmotieven, geometrische patronen, Bijbelse taferelen, familiewapens — elk huis vertelt een verhaal.Almost every house is covered in sgraffito — an age-old technique where patterns are scratched into the still-wet plaster, revealing the dark layer beneath. Floral motifs, geometric patterns, biblical scenes, family crests — every house tells a story.

Guarda staat er om bekend — het dorp wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste van heel Zwitserland en staat op de lijst van beschermde erfgoeddorpen.Guarda is renowned for it — the village is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Switzerland and is listed as a protected heritage village.
